Newsletter February 2022

Kia ora everyone,

This is our second newsletter for the year 2022. We hope that you all had a great summer and some time to relax with family and friends. Throughout the coming year we will offer many activities for everyone who is interested in the German language and culture!

On the 2nd of February we held our first-ever AGM and we now have an official committee, welcoming some new faces. Tobias Maletz stays in the roles of president and treasurer. New to the committee are Dineke Schokkin (secretary), Marie Schwarzinger (vice-president and educational officer), Lisa Brooks (language course coordinator), Franziska Haas and Miriam Gottschalk (joint role of marketing manager).

Vera Leier has decided to step down from any formal roles within the organisation, and will only be involved in the background. As a co-founder of Deutsch in Christchurch Vera has been a great help in putting our organisation on the map. Last year was very productive and our events were well attended. For example, we had the Christmas Market, the ‘Kia ora Berlin Wall’ and the ‘Bauhaus seminar and film’. Also there was and still is growing interest in our regular activities like the playgroup, language courses and book club. Without Vera we would not have been able to get this off the ground so quickly and we thank her immensely for her contribution and wish her the best of luck for her future.

We’re also very excited to announce that we have a new website: www.deutschinchristchurch.org. Please make sure to check it out, because here you can find all the latest news about our activities and events and links to sign yourself up for them.

Our playgroup restarted on the 9th of February, and in the next few weeks we will celebrate Fasching, or Karneval as it is also known. The kids are surely looking forward to a lot of singing, dancing, dressing up, and general silliness.

Our popular kids’ language course also restarted on the same day. On the 24th of February our adult language courses (beginner and post-beginner) will resume. We still have space for further participants, so please pass this information on to anyone who would be keen to join. On our website you can find all the details and information on how to register.

Lastly, in the near future we are planning two events, so save the date! :)

  • Federweißer (a festival to celebrate the first wine from Giesen Wines): 2 April 2022

  • Christmas Market @ Riverside: 15, 16 and 17 July 2022

More details to follow. Without a doubt 2022 will still be an unusual year as we all try to navigate the ever-changing world of today, but we hope to see many of you at our activities and events throughout the year. As always, if you have any questions or feedback, please get in touch. Our contact details are on our website (www.deutschinchristchurch.org) or if you haven’t done so yet, please join our Facebook group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/930815340792232.

Liebe Grüße und bis nächstes Mal,

Euer Komitee

Mit freundlicher Unterstützung des Goethe-Institut Neuseeland.
